Talking to analyzers: ASTM, HL7 and twenty years of serial ports

Integration work is rarely glamorous, but it is where a product proves whether it understands the real world.

01

The old interface was still doing important work.

In a modern product conversation, a serial connection can sound like technical debt. On a working floor, it can be the reliable bridge between an instrument and the record people depend on.

The challenge was not to replace everything with something fashionable. It was to meet the existing system carefully and carry its meaning forward.

02

Protocols are part of the user experience.

A message format, a device handshake and a validation rule eventually become a person waiting for an answer. That makes integration design part of product design.

The work is successful when the complexity stays at the boundary and the operator sees a clear, trustworthy result.

03

The lesson was respect for the edge.

The best systems do not assume the world will be rewritten for them. They build bridges to what already works, then improve the path around it.
